Did Bernie Madoff die in 2009?

MMDE: Bernie Madoff died in 2009

Current: Bernie Madoff did not die in 2009

Bernie Madoff ran the largest Ponzi scheme in history.

The total amount missing was nearly $65Bn, and he was sentenced to 150 years in jail in 2009. Many remember him committing suicide shortly afterwards in jail, and are surprised to hear he didn't do so.

He was the chairman of NASDAQ, which would have helped enormously with his credibility when pulling off his scam. His firm had a "special arrangement" with Wall St which enabled it to bypass the strict checks and balances other firms were subjected to and directly executed orders over the counter from retail brokers.

He did attempt suicide with his wife in 2008 on Christmas Eve, so perhaps news of this came out at the time and people thought he was sucessful.

Van Gogh

Himself, or in a fight?

MMDE: In a fight

Current: Himself

Towards the end of Van Gogh's life, he was sat in his studio surrounded by many of his unsold paintings. In fact, during his life he only sold one, and that was to an art gallery owner. Those paintings each sold for many millions after his tragic death. In fact he gave one to his doctor, who didn't like it so used it to repair his chicken coup. It was worth $50m in 2016.

It's well known he lost his ear, and most believe he did it to himself. However, this story has taken a few twists down the years and the absolute truth still is not certain. His friend Gauguin was planning to leave, and as Wikipedia reports:

Van Gogh followed when Gauguin left the house for a walk, and "rushed towards me, an open razor in his hand". This account is uncorroborated;Gauguin was almost certainly absent from the Yellow House that night, most likely in a hotel.

Clive James

When did Clive James die?

MMDE: 2012

Current: 2019

Clive James was warmly thought of as the quick-witted, likeable 'bloke from Aussie', famous for his TV work. When reports of his death came out in 2019, many were taken by surprise, however, as they were sure he'd died 7 years earlier in 2012.

There are many celebrity death stories which turn out to be fake. Sometimes there is more to them, such as the Nelson Mandela one itself. The Clive James one may have an explanation, however, from the fact that people remember it being 2012 when he died. That's because in that year he announced on BBC Radio 4 that leukemia "had beaten him".

In fact he went on to write a weekly column for The Guardian until June 2017, and seemed to be aware of the celebrity death hoax phenomenon, because in his inimitable style he titled it "Reports of My Death..."

Tiger Woods

Was Tiger Woods an American Gladiators contestant?

MMDE: Tiger Woods was an American Gladiators contestant

Current: Tiger Woods was not an American Gladiators contestant

Slate reports that people are remembering a teenage Tiger Woods appearing as a contestant in the mid 90's on the American Gladiators show. Did a teenage Tiger Woods appear on it? Some remember him doing so, but there is no trace of this today which is why it's being called a Mandela Effect.

Famous for it's over-the-top showmanship, the fitness levels of its contestants and the inventive obstacles they had to contend with, the show ran from 1989 to 1996 and was seen in various forms the world over.

The idea seems to have originated at Slate, because the brother of one of it's staff mentioned it and they ran the story. Many others have vague memories of it too, and even the exact obstacles he had to deal wit are remembered, in this case the assault course.

Robert Mugabe

When did Robert Mugabe die?

MMDE: Robert Mugabe died in 2017

Current: Robert Mugabe died in 2019

Robert Mugabe was a divisive figure indeed, but news of his death in 2019 caused some more concern than others, because they were sure he died in 2017.

Wait - this is another famous figure from South Africa involved in a mysterious reality glitch phenomenon? Perhaps it needs a catchy name so we can class other similar situations easier, something like The Mugabe Effect?

He was ousted as leader in 2017, but those who are sure he died earlier than 2019 remember him dying at the same time as the coup which saw him lose power from Zimbabwe.

Like Nelson Mandela, he spent many years in prison in the 60's only to be released and become a hugely important world figure.

Henry Ford

Ford

MMDE: The Henry Ford car company did not fire Henry Ford

Current: The Henry Ford car company fired Henry Ford

It sounds like a trick question.

Was Henry Ford fired from the company which bore his name? The answer is a surprising "yes". Of course there's a little more to it that that. Notice it isn't the "Ford Motor Company" which fired him, but the "Henry Ford" company. That's a very important distinction, because the company which bore his exact name was one set up very early in his career, and was named from his fame as a racer and car inventor, i.e. the "Henry Ford" motor company.

After working for this early company, he was indeed fired because he was said to be spending all his time working on a race car, and not a passenger car.

Things moved on swiftly, however, and he then founded "The Ford Motor Co." in 1903. The rest, as we all know, is history.

Stephen Hawking

Awarded Nobel prize for physics

MMDE: Stephen Hawking received a nobel prize around 2010

Current: Stephen Hawking did not receive a nobel prize around 2010

Stephen Hawking made a huge contribution to science, even having an actual effect named after him in the form of Hawking Radiation, which he theorised was "emitted" from black holes. His book, "a brief history of time", is recognised throughout the world as making the advanced ideas in quantum physics and cosmology accessible to the general public at large.

Many remember him being awarded a nobel prize around 2010, but this is not the case today. They even describe his award ceremony being shown on TV, and the acceptance speech he delivered with his computer-generated voice .

Of particular interest to those experiencing the Mandela Effect is the fact he was a supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics, because this is a possible explanation for the effect itself.
